Sounds like a skin infection, which is far far more common than a BR bite resulting in this. Also with BRs, their fangs are extremely small and will not leave bite marks and are almost always painless. In fact, almost no spider in the US will leave bite marks other than a tarantula, and you’ll definitely know when bit by one. The number one culprit when BRs are blamed are actually flies. Yep, biting flies are everywhere and many have anesthetic saliva so you don’t feel them bite, such as noseeums. When these bite, they do so multiple times and because the bite isn’t felt, you now have an open wound that isn’t clotting and is a great opening for bacteria. Then the anesthetic properties wear off and it begins to itch and then scratching it introduces more bacteria, especially when out camping and not washing hands frequently after touching nature. Skin infections are almost always the actual cause of blamed BR bites. You are more likely to be struck twice by lightning than have a BR bite become serious.
