It is risky. A murder weapon can potentially get linked back to a killer. Finger prints, serial number. Often times a killer overlooks something, like wiping their prints off of the bullets that are still loaded in the magazine, even if they wiped the rest of the gun. Its much better if they can destroy the weapon so it can never be found or at least matched to the fired bullet. But getting caught with it on your person is game over.
