Roosters are assholes by design. sounds like he was a jerk and it may be time to get a new one to manage your flock. Dont feel bad, give another rooster a chance that would otherwise have been culled. Let that bastard go. Hope you feel better soon OP.

Honestly that sounds like the root of problem and chickens feeding on your purchased compost is a side effect of the broken circle. Are you composting your home scraps? Annually I have a new compost thats being fed by my household food scraps (including coffee & egg shells) and supplemented by hen house waste plus vegetable matter from the gardens. Then next year that gets spread around my gardens and orchards and a new pile is established.

Sounds like you need bigger gardens and orchards then. Setup a more efficient circle of life where each of your systems feed the other ones. Nothing wasted.

My only suggestion is to use steel feeder and waterer and avoid plastic as much as able. What you put into your chickens, gardens, etc is what you get out of them. Avoid poisoning the planet and your family as much as able and pay more for better quality sustainable tools when you are able.
