Welcome to what DMs refer to as the rule of cool! Okay so technically the books might say you cant do something or a spell doesnt work quite that way, or whateverbut if it would be really COOL if it worked just this ONCEthen hell, let it happen! The game is for you and friends to laugh and have fun; let the game do it, rules be damned.

You are wise beyond your DM years. When i hear about someone creating a homebrew world and theyve spent countless hours working out precise setpiece scenarios and NPC family trees and economics andIm like Your players are gonna wreck that shit by session 2. As you said; create the situations, let those bumbling chuckling idiot friends of yours write the story.

He has some Main Character issues, even as a DM. HIS world, HIS backstory, HIS game. A perfect fantasy story for him to dictate to the others, as they play; a captured audience.

But the rest of the party wasnt into that style of play. Flyboy was gaming the game, to the detriment of the rest, including the DM. Its easy to tell your playstyle is similar, for example.

SO, my players (40s-50s, professionals all) came upon a line of statues that were going to activate into stone golems in ten seconds if they couldnt guess the next number in a sequence. The magical voice (me) gave the numbers, then started counting down from ten as the statues started to turn their heads at the party. They panicked and babbled until one said ooh theyre prime numbers! and shouted the answer at the 4 count. The constructs stopped moving. Point being, even an easy riddle can be tough if its outta nowhere or live timed somehow. Adds urgency that masks the simplicity of the riddle.
