I finished my CPA work at 42. Very similar experience. People who grew up with money are insuferably entitled. I wouldn’t have done it for real, mainly because they wouldn’t be able to understand, but sometimes they would say something so mind-bogglingly detached from the lives that most of us live that I wanted to bunch them.

No. But I’m terrible at recognizing people unless I’m super close to them. I had a total stranger have a conversation once. Turned out to be defense attorney, I had gone up against dozens of times. But we ran into each other outside of work, and she was dressed casual and had her hair down. It was not until she brought it up when she was defending a parolee I was trying to send to prison that I found out who had been talking to me at the movies a week before. I could probably have a conversation with Bono and not know it if he didn’t tell me who he was.

I’ve been eating them all my life. As a third generation Bay Area kid, I grew up on dry salami, olives, bleu cheese, sourdough dough french bread, cocktail olives, brie, extra sharp cheddar, spicy mustard and figs of my grandparents tree in the back yard.

Still mine. I fight every day for a better future. But for me? Whatever. I don’t care now and didn’t then. If I have done my best for my family and for the people I can help, I’m cool.

Fried, with mustard on sourdough. Just like it’s 1979 and I’m 7. The memories of mom making that for me.
