It still is. I watched a half hour of a college woman’s tournament recently.

The 90s. I was born in 72 and was 18 by 1990. It was a glorious time. My magical fairy wish would be to 25 and be able to live in the 90s or the 70s as I chose. I would start in 1970. I’d bust my ass to get my CPA license and use the money to buy as much Bay Area property as I could. I’d set them up as not-for-profit rentals. I’d have strict rules set up to protect the property and the tenants. Rent would be based on the maintenance and repairs of the property and pay the management company that will be taking care of the properties. At the end of the year, a full audit would be conducted, and when the final report is completed, any excess would be returned to the tenants. No new residents would be accepted after 1985. All residents already living in a property could remain as long as they wanted to. But when they moved or passed, that property would be withdrawn from the rental pool. Whenever a property became fully vacant, it would be maintained until the early 90s and then sold off slowly enough to not glut the market. Once that was all set up I’d go back to 1994 and lead an insolent life style in one of the two properties that I had kept one in Oakland and one in San Francisco.

I’d have drowned. I can swim but poorly. Congratulations. That is impressive.

I don’t think I’ve ever thought I was going to die. As I look back over my memories, I can pick out a couple of times where death was not unlikely. I’ve been afraid I would get hurt, but pain has always been my most attentive companion. But I’ve always been most concerned with correcting whatever the situation is. Be it losing blood from careless use of knives. Or running a fever that hit 107.3. Or waking up in a hospital bed that I am told I had been in for 3 days. Or fighting with an inmate who was trying to throw me over the railing to the concrete below. Or hearing explosions. I’ve always just tried to solve the problem at hand and as often as possible get everything cleaned up so that no one in my family would be worried.

My daughter graduates from medical school in May. She has worked so hard. I’m amazed as I look back at all she has done. She took dual credit classes in high school and started her undergraduate studies with 30 credit hours. BS in 3 years. MS with honors in one. And today, she is in her intetnal medicine rotation.

I was at the dentist two weeks back, and while the tech was cleaning my teeth, I was thinking of those little red pills. Were they still around in the ’80s? My memories of chewing those things all seem to be in the 70s.
