My home came with a strawberry patch that critters ate up the first 2 years here. Once I got my dog I got to eat my strawberries. I couldnt afford to not have a dog. Aside from critter patrol and protecting the chickens she guards the land and is the best companion ever.

My Staffy/Ridgeback handles all the critters we dont want for me. The first year I got her she killed 14 ground squirrels, now its about 5a year. She keeps the hawks and foxes from being too interested in my hens as well. Highly recommend a good dog and fencing.

My Staffy / Ridgeback takes care of all the ground squirrels and any other rodentia. A good dog goes a long way. Then the carcass goes into the black soldier fly farm and my chickens snack on the larvae. Circle of life around here.
