What this faculty member was saying (in more academic terms) was this system sucks, we need to get rid of it. If youre prepared to have people lose their jobs for that kind of sentiment, think how broad that is. I know people across the political spectrum that share such sentiments. Often.

And that is 100% constitutionally protected speech. A broad-based call for revolution, even violent revolution, is not the same as a specific threat to an individual(s). In addition, overthrow” can mean change via violence, for sure, but it can also and very legitimately just mean changing the system of power by any number of means. You can “overthrow” a governing system/apparatus via elections, via protests, via incremental reform, via constitutional changes, and yes, via violence.

Repeating your narrow and limited understanding of Marxism doesn’t make it any more accurate. Look at the Scandinavian countries, which have democratically and peacefully implemented comprehensive socialist and social democratic policies. These nations consistently rank among the highest in the world for well-being, productivity, equality, and political participation, while maintaining some of the lowest rates of crime and violence globally.

What are you referring to? (genuine question, not snarkiness)

Yes. I don’t think someone should lose their job for misgendering someone. While I think it’s rude and inconsiderate (especially after they are made aware of what they’re doing), I don’t think they should be fired for that.

You can think that all you want, but embrace this authoritarianism at your peril. All of these expansive powers will be in the hands of someone you dont agree with in the future.

I fully understand the sentiment, and I’ve heard similar statements from alumni where I work (UT Austin), as our university also bends the knee to authoritarianism. However, you shouldn’t be embarrassed by your degree! You worked hard for it, and you can’t control the actions of a cowardly university administration.

It has to do with the removal of folks for their political or ideological beliefs (aka the point of this post).
