What should amaze you is that it’s perfectly legal for a cop to use ignorance of the law as a legal defense. The reason? There’s too many laws for the to know all of them, and for them to act within those laws, dispite that being thier only purpose. But the average citizen? You know, the ones that aren’t tasked with upholding the laws? Ignorance is not an excuse, straight to jail.
