There were several movies with atomic and nuclear bomb blasts, so that is a reasonable explanation. Not proven but not to be dismissed out of hand.

That was a special feeling. We’d play on the playground off to the side of the cars. We we’re all in pajamas and slippers. It would finally be dark enough for the trailers to start. We would scatter back to our cars. Climb into the back seat and grab the popcorn that mom had made at home and poured into a double stacked paper grocery bag and generously salted. It was like a gallon of popcorn. Munchy, munchy, munchy, munch. Get a cup of kool-aid from a beat up green thermos that your dad uses for his coffee on his way to work, so it had a faint hint of coffee. You loved that about drive-in movie kool-aid. You, very secretly, felt more grown-up because of that. I’d watch the movie for as long as I could. Maybe 5 minutes of Jaws. Almost all of Star Wars. And then just barely waking up on your dad’s shoulder as he carried you close to him as he walks up the stairs and put you under the covers of your bed and gives you a little whiskery kiss. I felt completely relaxed, absolutely safe, secure and and wholly loved.

My grandma would ask for a Gibson or a Gimlet. But she would have been there.

They had survived so much. The great depression. WWII. The atomic bomb and the red scare. They were due a drink.
