Im sure there was nudity and violence. But there are plenty of westerns that blow deadwood out of the water with a way more compelling story line. For instance Godless starring Jeff Daniels.

Deadwood is the epitome of HBO relying completely on sex/nudity/cursing/violence to hold a show together.
