I’m not an expert. My personal experience was that kava kava got me very relaxed but encouraged me to think thoughts that would re-stress me out. For staying asleep, sleeping deeply I found CBD oil capsules helpful, but I grew acclimated to them and needed ever higher dosages (expensive) unless I quit them once in a while for a week. I had my best luck with a mix I adapted from a book that had hops, for staying asleep, not thinking stressful thoughts. Consider encouraging your husband to try a holistic approach to his stress instead of just using herbs as a substitute for pharmaceuticals: Fixing what he can about the stressful situation Venting about his stress Identifying what is stressing him, his personal meaning behind it, and reframing that situation in a realistic, but less stressful way Getting excellent nutrition Decompressing after work with exercise, vigorous exercise at the gym or even just taking long walks when he first gets home.
