Its our societys view of pull yourself up by your own bootstraps and individualism that isolates us all regardless of gender, etc., and creates apathy when our meager social safety nets we do have get gutted. Society as a whole and especially the current government see needing help as weakness and a character flaw thats not their responsibility.
