Right, this is a core dilemma of the human experience. Of course most people agree it makes sense to sacrifice one life to save millions, maybe more. But if that one life was your child? Most parents would not willingly make that sacrifice. At the same time, Joels not a saint. Hes a survivor, and in order to survive in that world hes had to do bad things. Its easy to be sympathetic because hes been through a lot and been wronged by the world at large, but that doesnt mean his actions should be forgiven easily. Part of what makes it such a great story are the moral struggles it presents.
