Yeah this is why I dont think the show scene will divide the audience that much. TV viewers are used to main characters dying since game of thrones and walking dead and a myriad of other shows, its commonplace. Video games, while similar, is a different medium. You really start to feel a connection to the characters you play as, as you are, to a degree, dictating how their story and actions play out, and you view things from their perspective. In the game you spend so many more hours with Joel directly, seeing all of his little moments he has, alone with himself or slowly and organically building up a meaningful and fatherly relationship with Ellie. And where shows of this nature have trained us to expect important characters to get killed off, video games often train us to expect to play as the popular main characters repeatedly over a myriad of subsequent sequels. I can understand gamers would be so sore about it (of course some took their grief way too far), but for the show its going to play out like the red wedding or Glenns death. Which were rough, but not dealbreakers for most.
