He was a native in a time where priests could just ride up to him and beat him. Of course he is going to be worried about a Marshall and a priest.

He ran, because of his experiences with people like the marshall and the priest. It wasn’t rocket science to see that they were there to get him or his friends, that they would use him to get to/hurt his friends, or just flatout kill him like they did.
