Can’t hurt to try. Maybe start with how to use a laundromat. Put in some effort, but don’t go over the top. If you must go over the top, keep in mind that you don’t want to hurt her feelings. And then offer to go with her to the laundromat. She can run a load of laundry and will have both the instruction sheet, but you also if she needs help.

I read a story about how the installation of party lines out to farmers caused a reduction in suicide. I love that story. People lived because they were just a little bit less lonely.

I’ve never used a party line, but my wife has. She would spend summers with her grandmother in the hills of Virginia. And her grandmother had a party line. I used a dial phone for longer than I used push-button phones. And way longer than I have used cell phones. We moved from California to Texas in 1981 when I was 9. I went from the standard of the day 7 digit phone number for local calls to only needing to dial 4 digits because there were fewer than 400 phone numbers. Every number began 63.

A great-grandfather. He was able to get US citizenship by joining the Army.
