Google did this because of pressure from right wingers complaining to them about those reminders being there. There are a lot European Americans who are bigots, who need to feel like they are above somebody else. Seeing reminders for the observances of other groups of people mixed into a calendar with their observance days gives those other groups of people basic respect and dignity. That undermines the bigots need to feel better than someone else.
