Your boyfriend is full of shit. I’m sorry to hear that the two of you have children. People get trapped in Christianist cults because of the free stuff they are promised. Forgiveness for “sins”, being made to feel that they are superior to everyone else, and shunning the teachings that are actually written in their bible. Hopefully your boyfriend will recover from what I believe is a mental illness. But don’t hold your breath.

In my opinion, humans created religion to deal with the realization that we will each die. No other creature seems to be aware (or care) of its own mortality.

If you lived in the US you would not be surprised. We have been up to our necks in Christianist bullshit for decades now. They came up with the idea that abortion is murder – as if someone who hasn’t been born yet could be murdered. They come up with ridiculous excuses for slavery and murder with guns. Christianists are people who try to look and act and sound like Christians so they can get all the social benefits that come with it. They talk Christian dogma and they exhibit a couple of hateful Christian behaviors. They become very active in their local religious communities so they can get away with sexually abusing children and misappropriating funds. In this country, a lot of people assume that if you say you’re a Christian that makes you a good person. But a lot of people who say they’re Christians are not – they’re Christianists.

I believe it’s because most Christians aren’t really Christians, they are Christianists. They put on an outer appearance of piety, like we put on costumes for Halloween. But they wear these costumes all the time. They like the social benefits that come with pretending to be pious. They have lived their lives listening to people in a position of authority and believing everything they were told. Even when they are told bullshit, they put energy into believing it. To them, faith means believing what they’re told. Even if they’re told to send money for a piece of the true cross, or for a little vial of holy water. Christianity is not a religion anymore. It’s a social group.
