Nothing un-vegetarian about being soaked in oil. Vegetarianism has historically been about religion, ethics, or both, not optimal health. In the ancient world many people did not get a lot to eat. The oil was probably appealing in terms of getting more calories for that 1 helping you did get.

if you ever get bored shaming people about veganism You mean shaming people for NOT being vegan, right? 🙂 $20 per lb How many cups ( 8 fluid ounces ) would you get per pound? What would be the price per cup. I used to buy really expensive Japanese green tea. They knew how to market their products. They would emphasize “price per cup”. I thought it was smart. At the time, at work, there was a soda machine where I would get a 20 oz bottle of diet coke for just under $2. The “price per cup” for quality green tea seemed very competitive. Do you know about Equal Exchange ( fair trade ) coffee? Only about $12 a pound.

I’m not a coffee drinker. I was shocked to see that a frapuccino costs over $7! A friend told me once that ordinary coffee at home costs less than $1 a cup?

Where I live lidl fruit isn’t really that cheap. But sometimes they have special offers. Is there an Asian grocery store nearby? Often they make produce into loss leaders. Second sentence isn’t really empathetic advice for someone with budget issues. Most of my adult life I have been disappointed about how small I could make my food budget, but could not because of the cost of produce. I have been to nutritionists that have told me that people not eating produce ( or enough ) get long term deficiencies which lead to diseases where poor micronutrient nutrition often isn’t recognized as the cause. I get the frustration of produce prices being high. I make it hurt less by telling myself it costs much less than a medical problem. That is the spirit I offered my advice in. You could try keeping a food diary at cronometer.com for a few weeks to see how much you need for various nutrients and what cheaper sources might be ( “Top 10 Sources Of ____” ). For example, I learned that broccoli has respectable amounts of vitamin C, so I don’t need fruit every single day. I also learned that brown rice and sunflower seeds ( cheap! ) have loads of selenium so I don’t need to buy Brazil nuts.

Lidl. Aldi. Inadequate nutrition can lead to health issues, invisibly, years and years later. Look at the price of produce as money you aren’t giving to the medical system.

I used to run into her and her husband ( even before they were married and just gaga over each other ) at the vegan/AR conventions. It is nice to see that her Giacomo are still around.
